The new episodes of My Name is Earl and now iCarly! Why are all new shows in wide screen or with a letterbox? I just don’t like it one bit!

Because widescreen TVs are popular knowadays. If you don’t have widescreen format on TV shows then the image would be stretched or there would be two black bars on the side. Also with widescreen format eventhough the picture might be smaller because of the black around there is still more content on the screen. You are able to see what is going on in the sides.

It like when you watch a movie on cable that was originally released at the theaters and before the movie starts it says "this movie is formatted to fit your screen." Basically it means they cut the sides off and show you the middle.
